Vercel vs Railway: Which Should You Deploy To?

These aren't really competitors
Vercel and Railway get compared constantly, and the comparison is usually framed as "which is better," which is the wrong question. They're built around two different execution models, and which one fits depends almost entirely on what your backend actually needs to do while it's running — not on which platform has a nicer dashboard.
Vercel: built around serverless functions
Vercel's core model is functions that spin up on request and shut down when they're done. That model is genuinely excellent for what it was built for: Next.js apps, static sites, and API routes that do a quick unit of work — validate input, hit a database, return JSON — and finish in a few seconds.
It's a poor fit for anything that needs to keep running between requests: a WebSocket connection, a background worker polling a queue, a long-running scrape, or a scheduled job that takes minutes. Vercel's functions have execution time limits (the exact ceiling depends on your plan), and every cold-started function pays a startup cost that a long-lived process doesn't. If your backend is "receive an HTTP request, do a bounded amount of work, respond," Vercel handles that well. If it's "keep a process alive," you're fighting the platform.
Railway: built around long-running containers
Railway's model is closer to a traditional server: you deploy a container (or point it at your Dockerfile), and it stays running. That makes it a much more natural fit for a FastAPI or Django backend that holds database connections open, runs a Celery worker alongside the API, or needs a persistent WebSocket connection for real-time features — none of which map cleanly onto a request-scoped function.
Railway also provisions databases (Postgres, Redis, MySQL) as first-class services you can spin up alongside your app with a few clicks, which matters if you don't want to manage a separate database host for a side project or an MVP.
Where they actually overlap
For a simple API with no background jobs, no WebSockets, and requests that finish quickly, either platform works fine — the choice mostly comes down to whether the rest of your stack is already on Vercel (a Next.js frontend calling a couple of API routes) or whether you're deploying a real backend service. If you already have a Vercel-hosted frontend and just need a couple of API routes, adding Vercel functions is less overhead than standing up a separate Railway service for the same thing.
Pricing and operational model
Vercel's free tier is generous for frontend-heavy, low-compute use cases, and its pricing scales with function invocations and bandwidth — reasonable for spiky, request-driven traffic. Railway bills based on actual resource usage (CPU, memory, network) for containers that are running continuously, which is a more predictable mental model if your service does meaningful background work, but means you're paying for uptime even during quiet periods, unlike a function that costs nothing when it's not invoked.
A practical way to decide
Ask what your backend does between requests. If the honest answer is "nothing — it only exists to answer a request and then it's done," a serverless model like Vercel's is a legitimate, often cheaper fit. If the answer involves a persistent connection, a background worker, a scheduled task longer than a few minutes, or state that needs to survive across requests without hitting a database every time, you want a platform built around long-running processes — Railway, or a similar container-based host.
Neither platform is the "correct" choice in the abstract. The architecture of what you're deploying decides that before pricing or developer experience even enters the conversation.
